Concert Recap TAINTED NATION – Serjos Rock Zone, Monzón (Huesca), October 5, 2013
It was nine o’clock at night. I was returning from a visit to Grans Records, a vynil record shop in Lleida, when I sudenly realized that the band TAINTED NATION were about to play in the Hall Serjos at Monzón. I caught the car without thinking twice, put the Helloween’s Rabbits don’t come easy in the CD drive and hit the gas. During the thirty miles that separated me from my destiny I rambled about the chance to meet face to face with Mark Cross, the drummer who played on two tracks on the album that was playing on my player. He had been for just six months with the germans, living in Tenerife, may native island actually, while recording in Andi Deris’s studio when an untimely illness prevented him from continuing in such band. I also thought that I would see again there Ian Nash who I had seen playing in Barcelona just two weeks ago with his other band, Steve Grimmett’s Grim Reaper. Geez! – I told myself – Tainted Nation’s vocalist was also Grim Reaper drummer time ago… Many coincidences together and two names of bands that are important to me as I have spent hours and hours listening to their music so I am not going to avoid attending the concert offered in Monzón (Huesca).
When I got there, my friend Jaume Aos, the indefatigable promoter of Aces of Space, greeted me with a “but if I’ve told you already” referring to my cluelessness that took me almost go past this concert. I was introduced to Yolanda Artmetal whom I’m sure I’ll be embroiled with occasional artistic and musical issues in the future. We entered the room where the opening group were finished: Last Chance To Say Goodbye.
Well, in my case, it was a unique opportunity to listen to them. I think they were amused when I told them: “First chance to say hello …and I was late!”
I saw Tainted Nation passing by and I shamely realized that Ian Nash was not among them. I thought I knew the reason for his absence. In two days time, Mark Rumble, his companion in Steve Grimmett’s band was getting married so he must be in England as a guest.
The small and motley Serjos scenario seemed insufficient to accommodate the six musicians that make the line-up of Tainted Nation during this spanish tour presentation of their first album “F. E. A. R.” In order you can remember their names I tell you who they are, my readers: a huge PETE NEWDECK to the voice, the tall and fit MARK CROSS to the drums while the bass player is the swedish man PONTUS EGBERG, lead guitar (replacing the absent IAN NASH) by JOEL PETERS and second guitar that handles Joel in normal circumstances, this time with the presence of a shy NEIL HIBBS.
There are a lot of musical history in the backgrounds of this british band. Each of its members has accumulated a large number of excellent work with other significative formations. Pete has been with Eden’s Curse, Newman, Grim Reaper, Paul Di’Anno Killers, The Shock (all as a drummer). Mark has played with Outland, Tank, Firewind, Helloween, Metalium and Ian Guillian Band. Ian Nash, despite not being on this tour, its fair to mention, has always worked closely with Steve Grimmett’s projects in Grim Reaper, Lionsheart and Seven Deadly Sins. Pontus has done with their fellow bands: The Poodles and Lion’s Share. And finally, the youngest member of this quintet, Joel, comes from Fury. Spite the little stage we could not expect more than a really great live performance effectively perpetrated by this veterans musicians that far from been shrunk were magnified by the conditions.
F.E.A.R. (Fight Enemies and Rulers) is the name of the album that they have presented. Following a song sequence slightly different from the record, the Tainted Nation were shelling us, one by one, eight of the twelve songs that make their first release that came out at January this year: starting with Dare You, where Pete encourages us to dare to trust and keep going. With Nothing Like You Seem and Still Hang Around it was already clear to me that this band has a sound tremendously powerful, something in between a modern hard with the Metal essence marked by the guitar riffs and the rhythm section. Who’s Watching You, Don’t Tell me, Haunted, Live and Die were the following themes (two of them don’t belong to the record) after which five of the members took a short break meanwhile the room saluted a short but gimmicky drum solo, with which Mark got a tremendous ovation from those present. Then he thanked us with a toast brewer.
With the next issue kept Pete trying to find a comfortable place between the gap in the stage and the speaker, putting his hand went up on the roof, which makes you realize about how big this man is. His shrill voice phrasing at full speed, projecting an energy that was somewhat compressed due to space bubble in which he had to move. Even so, the rest of musicians sound macerated with such a forcefulness that if they have had a bigger board we would have seen them moving surely with a greater display of skill stage. The theme Don’t Forget Where You Come From is a reminder that we have to go ahead and stay in the fight for self-identity. Never mind some anecdotal failures and problems with the micro an cables the band was behaving quite naturally, seemed happy and smiling all the time. They are funy and very interactive with the crowd, asking fom palms, ”yeahs” and some kind of participation.
Your Only Friend, What Are You Waiting For and the song that they have released also as a video clip, Loser (actually a version of the song “Bimbo” from Lambretta ) were the last subjects chosen by Tainted Nation to end the concert. The public did not agree with them to leave so soon and even a guy there had guts to hum the intro of Walls Of Jericho in a nod to Mark Cross (you know the “happy happy Halloween”) but he obviously did not listen. Tainted Nation returned to sing what I supposed to be the only ballad in the repertoire given to the title: You’re in love but it was not a slow song at all. A powerful theme was played so they left us well served and wanting to buy the album F.E A. R. “For the petrol expenses” Pete said.
After the photos, autographs, a little chat and some goodbye hugs I went back home driving my car with a very good impression of the friendliness and closeness of these great band in the scene. I felt of having done what I had to: going to Monzón with no worries about the distance or lack of time.
I take this opportunity to say hello to Ian Nash from here because he is responsable of many of the compositions. My gratitude to the rest of the band: Pete, Mark, Pontus, Joel and Neil for the firms and attention. Congratulations for your excellent work (Dennis Ward made a superb production, guys, and promoter Axel Wiesenauer of Rock’N’Growl does a grea job too. Thanks, Axel, for answering me so quickly ;)

Crónica Concierto de TAINTED NATION – Sala Serjos Zona Rock, Monzón (Huesca), 5 de octubre de 2013
Eran las nueve de la noche. Volvía de hacer una visita a Grans Records cuando me enteré de que los TAINTED NATION estaban a punto de tocar en la Sala Serjos. Pillé el coche sin pensármelo dos veces, metí el Rabbits don’t come easy de Helloween en el lector de CDs y apreté el acelerador. Durante los cincuenta kilómetros que me separaban de mi destino divagué sobre la posibilidad de encontrarme frente a frente con Mark Cross, el batería que tocaba en dos temas del disco que estaba sonando en mi reproductor. Él había estado durante apenas seis meses con los alemanes, viviendo en mi isla natal, Tenerife, mientras grababan en el estudio de Andi Deris, aunque una inoportuna enfermedad le impidió proseguir en esa formación. También pensé que allí me reencontraría con Ian Nash a quien había visto tocar en Barcelona hacía tan solo dos semanas, con su otra banda, Steve Grimmett’s Grim Reaper. ¡Caray! – me dije – pero si además el vocalista de Tainted Nation había sido baterista en Grim Reaper… Muchas casualidades juntas y muchos nombres de bandas con las que paso horas y horas como para eludir asistir al concierto que se iba a ofrecer en Monzón.
Cuando llegué a la Serjos allí estaba Jaume Aos, el infatigable promotor de Aces of Space, que me recibió con un “pero si ya te lo había dicho” refiriéndose a mi despiste que me llevó casi a dejar pasar de largo este concierto. Me presentó a Yolanda ArtMetal con quien estoy segura me veré enzarzada en alguna que otra cuestión artística y musical en el futuro. Entramos a la sala cuando había terminado ya el grupo telonero: Last Chance To Say Goodbye.
Bueno, en mi caso, era una primera oportunidad para decirles hola. Creo que les hizo gracia cuando les solté: First chance to say hello and I was late!
Vi pasar de largo a los Tainted Nation y me di cuenta que Ian Nash no estaba entre ellos. Creí saber el motivo de su ausencia. En dos días, Mark Rumble, su compañero a las baquetas con la banda de Steve Grimmett, contraería matrimonio así que debía estar en Inglaterra como invitado.
El pequeño y abigarrado escenario de la Serjos parecía insuficiente para acoger a los seis músicos que durante este tour presentación de su primer álbum “F. E. A. R.” conforman el line- up de Tainted Nation. A saber y para que os vayáis quedando con sus nombres, lectores, ellos son: un corpulento PETE NEWDECK a la voz, el alto y apuesto MARK CROSS a las baquetas, el responsable del bajo es el sueco PONTUS EGBERG, la guitarra solista (en sustitución del ausente IAN NASH) a cargo de JOEL PETERS y la segunda guitarra de la que se encarga Joel en circunstancias normales, esta vez, con la presencia de un discreto NEIL HIBBS.
Son muchos los antecedentes musicales de esta banda británica. Cada uno de sus miembros acumula un importante número de trabajos excelentes con otras bandas no menos importantes. Pete ha estado con Eden’s Curse, Newman, Grim Reaper, Paul Di’Anno Killers, The Shock (en calidad de batería). Mark ha tocado con Outland, Tank, los griegos Firewind, Helloween, Metalium y Ian Guillian Band. Ian Nash, pese a no estar en este tour, a su vez, ha colaborado siempre muy estrechamente con Steve Grimmett y sus proyectos Grim Reaper, Lionsheart y Seven Deadly Sins. Pontus lo ha hecho con sus bandas compatriotas: The Poodles y Lion’s Share. Y por último, el más joven miembro de este quinteto, Joel, proviene de Fury y Eden’s Curse. Con unas tablas así no se podía esperar más que un gran directo perpetrado por buenísimos y eficaces músicos a quienes, una actuación en el reducido espacio de la Serjos, lejos de empequeñecerlos, les engrandeció.
F.E.A.R. (Fight Enemies and Rulers) es el nombre del álbum que nos han presentado. Siguiendo una secuencia ligeramente distinta a la aparecida en el disco, los Tainted Nation nos fueron desgranando, uno a uno, ocho de los doce temas que componen éste su primer lanzamiento que salió a la luz a principios de año: arrancaron con Dare You, donde Pete nos anima a que nos atrevamos a confiar y le dejemos entrar. Le sigue Nothing Like You Seem y con Still Hang Around ya me queda claro que esta banda tiene un sonido tremendamente potente que media entre un hard rock actual con la esencia metalera marcada por los riffs de guitarra y la base rítmica. Who’s Watching You, Don’t Tell me, Haunted, Live and Die fueron los siguientes temas (dos de ellos no perenecen al disco) tras los que cinco de los miembros se tomaron un breve descanso mientras la sala se cuadró ante un corto pero efectista solo de batería, con el que Mark consiguió una tremenda ovación por parte de los presentes y que nos agradeció con un brindis cervecero.
Con el siguiente tema Pete no paraba de buscar un sitio entre la primera tabla del escenario y el altavoz, al que se subía poniendo la mano en el techo, lo cual te hace pensar en lo grande que es este hombre. Su voz de timbre agudo frasea a toda velocidad, proyectando una energía que quedaba algo comprimida debido al espacio burbuja en el que tenía que moverse. Todo y así, el resto de músicos maceraban el sonido con una contundencia que de haber tenido un gran tablero les habríamos visto desplazarse con una gran exhibición de pericia escénica. El tema Don’t Forget Where You Come From es un recordatorio de que se ha de seguir adelante y mantenerse en la lucha de la identidad propia. No importaban algunos fallidos y anecdóticos problemas con el micro. La banda se comportaba con toda naturalidad, parecían felices y sonrientes, simpatía e interacción con los allí presentes, pidiendo palmas, yeahs y participación.
Your Only Friend, What You Are Waiting For y la canción del que han sacado un videoclip, Loser (de hecho una versión del “Bimbo” de Lambretta) eran los últimos temas escogidos por los Tainted Nations para acabar el concierto. El público no estuvo conforme con que se fueran tan pronto y hasta un asistente tuvo agallas para tararear la intro del Walls Of Jerico en un guiño a Mark Cross (happy happy Helloween) pero obviamente este no hizo caso. Tainted Nation volvieron para cantarnos lo que podría haber sido la única balada del repertorio dado el título (You’re in love) pero para nada se trataba de un medio tiempo. Un tema potente para que nos fuéramos bien servidos y con ganas de comprar el disco F.E. A.R. ¡Para la gasolina!, dijo Pete.
Tras las fotos, los autógrafos, un poco de charla y algunos abrazos de despedida que me dejaron una muy buena impresión de la afabilidad y cercanía de estos grandes de la escena, me fui a casa, en mi coche, con la sensación de haber hecho lo que tenía que hacer: ir a la Serjos sin pensar en la distancia y la falta de tiempo.
Aprovecho para saludar desde aquí a Ian Nash porque a él se debe buena parte de las composiciones del disco. Mi gratitud para el resto de la banda: Pete, Mark, Pontus, Joel y Neil. Enhorabuena por vuestro excelente trabajo (Dennis Ward hace unas producciones cojonudas y Axel Wiesernauer os promociona estupendamente. Gracias Axel por contestarme tan rápido ;)
